Description

1867 Aluminum Five Cents
Judd-561, PR64

1867 5C Five Cents, Judd-561, Pollock-622, R.5, PR64 PCGS. The central obverse device is a head of Liberty facing left, wearing a headdress of four large feathers and a ribbon with the inscription UNION AND LIBERTY. Resting in the hair in front of the ribbon are four large stars. The Chief Engraver's name LONGACRE F. is stylishly displayed at the truncation of the neck. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around, with the date in the exergue. The reverse features a Roman numeral V over an ornate shield, with IN GOD WE TRUST at the top. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. This is one of the more obtainable aluminum patterns, and one with an interesting design. The surfaces are not oxidized, but are just a bit lackluster. Still the fields are bright and the devices sharply contrast.
