    Description

1867 Longacre Indian Head Five Cent, PR64 Brown
Struck in Copper, V on Shield Reverse, Judd-564

1867 5C Five Cents, Judd-564, Pollock-625, High R.7, PR64 Brown PCGS. The James B. Longacre Indian Princess Head design appears on the obverse. Liberty faces left wearing a headdress with long feathers curving down and back, four stars at the front, a trailing ribbon reading UNION & LIBERTY. The date 1867 is in exergue, with LONGACRE F. below the bust and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the margin. The reverse is the "V on Shield" die according to Judd, a V placed over a shield similar to that on the obverse of the Shield nickel but rounder, with IN GOD WE TRUST at the top and terminal volutes top and bottom. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.
Less than a half-dozen are known of this rare pattern, per USPatterns.com; only the Judd-561 and Judd-562 patterns appear with any regularity, and we note that the Lemus/Queller Collection (Heritage, 1/2009) went from Judd-561 to Judd-566. The LONGACRE F. may have been inspired by the C. GOBRECHT F. of the 1836 Gobrecht dollars. This medium-brown near-Gem displays trouble-free surfaces and good eye appeal. A tiny patch of carbon appears on the lower reverse inside the shield. Population: 1 in 64 Brown, 0 finer (4/12). (NGC ID# 29M7, PCGS# 60774)
