1867 Five Cent Pattern in Nickel
    Collectible and Obtainable Judd-566, PR64+

1867 5C Five Cents, Judd-566, Pollock-627, Low R.6, PR64+ NGC. The obverse features a bust of Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet but lacking a star, surrounded by the legend and date. The denomination is within a laurel wreath that is close to the edges on the reverse, with a tiny IN GOD WE TRUST above. CENTS is in a straight line. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. This is one of the more available five cent patterns from the 1865 to 1867 period, with about two dozen known. Examples were also struck in copper, and only about half a dozen of these are known. This is a moderately reflective proof (typical of many proof nickels of the period) that has gray-brilliant surfaces with just a bit of lilac over each side. Traces of a fingerprint can be seen at the top of the reverse. (NGC ID# 29M9, PCGS# 60776)

Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the results of the auction and I truly believe it was Jill’s efforts in promoting and displaying the piece that brought in the extra value.
