1867 With Rays Five Cents in Copper
    Judd-572, PR63 Brown

1867 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-572, Pollock-648, Low R.7, PR63 Brown NGC. The regular issue With Rays dies, struck in copper with a plain edge. The rays between the reverse stars were short-lived on the Shield nickel and disappeared during 1867, creating a second subtype for the design. This particular coin has received comment on "Over a half dozen are known struck from Dannreuther die #1. The example in Heritage 4/18 appears to have received only one strike from the dies and is a later state with some obverse die cracks." As expected from Saul's description, the strike details are weak on each side. Both sides are covered with deep brown patina.

With the superb catalog, a masterwork prepared by Mark Borckhardt, the sale was destined to meet all of my expectations; that it did, and then some. Be assured that I would highly recommend Heritage Auctions to any of my associates contemplating the sale
