1867 With Rays Shield Nickel in Copper
    Judd-572, PR65 Brown

1867 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-572, Pollock-648, Low R.7, PR65 Brown PCGS. The regular issue With Rays dies, struck in copper with a plain edge. The rays between the reverse stars were short-lived on the Shield nickel and disappeared during 1867, creating a second subtype for the design. This copper impression of the With Rays Shield nickel has far better detail than seen on copper-nickel examples, owing to the softer metal. The obverse has dusky blue, violet, and orange overtones against a brown backdrop, while the reverse is surprisingly orange for a "Brown" coin with similar colors to the obverse forming a minority on the opposite side. Modest spotting does not infringe upon the Gem grade.
