Description

Copper 1867 Shield Nickel Pattern, Judd-573

1867 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-573, Pollock-649, R.7--Damaged, Corroded--ANACS. XF Details, Net PR20. Similar to the regular issue 1867 No Rays Nickel, but struck in copper (instead of copper-nickel) with a plain edge. Judd-573 has two variants, which slightly differ in the arrangement of the stars on the reverse. Pollock-649 has a star centered below the first A in AMERICA, and apparently shares the same reverse die as certain 1866-dated patterns. This tan-brown piece has hints of verdigris. The obverse has minor rims at 12 and 2 o'clock and a shallow scratch near 3 o'clock.
