1867 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-573A, Pollock-647, R.8--Scratched--ANACS. AU Details, Net PR45. Die trials striking of the 1867 No Rays Shield Nickel, struck in copper with a plain edge. The position of the reverse stars relative to the first T in STATES, the E IN STATES, the C in CENT, the N in CENTS, and the S in CENTS suggest that this reverse die is the same used to coin 1866 pattern Shield Nickels. Somehow, this example entered circulation for a short time, and now shows several marks and small scratches as a result. An exceedingly rare off-metal pattern issue at an affordable price.
