Description

Judd-664 1868 Ten Dollar Pattern, PR65
Regular Design in Aluminum

1868 $10 Ten Dollar, Judd-664, Pollock-739, Low R.7, PR65 PCGS. The regular dies for the 1868 eagle, struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. There are two distinct ten dollar patterns in aluminum for 1868, and the Judd-664, made with regular dies, is rarer than the Judd-663 (which bears an experimental design). The Judd reference lists the Judd-664 as a "Low R.7," which would imply a known population of close to a dozen pieces, yet expert Web site USPatterns.com claims "about a half dozen are known." At least four were issued as part of aluminum pattern sets. Whether this Gem specimen was part of such a set is unknown, but the surfaces of the present lot -- in parts pale aluminum-blue and mirrored, in other places more hazy with a green-gold tint -- are readily appreciated regardless.
