1868 Dime in Copper, PR63 Brown
Judd-642, The Only Example in Private Hands
    Ex: Woodin-Farouk

1868 10C Ten Cents, Judd-642, Pollock-714, Cassel-39, R.8, PR63 Brown PCGS. 27.46 grains. The obverse is of the regular dies 1868 dime. The reverse, however, shares the same design as Judd-640 through 646, showing ONE DIME in the center, a six-pointed star above, the date below, and all surrounded by a wreath of cotton, corn, and tobacco. SEM-EDX tested by QC Metallurgical on certificate number 60860.63/21873030 confirmed this piece was struck in pure copper. Designated a Brown coin, the surfaces are deep brown with just the faintest glimmers of red still evident surrounding the devices. Only one other Judd-642 is known, and that piece is part of the Mitchelson Collection at the Connecticut State Library. That coin weighs 18 grains, making each piece known unique in its weight category.
Ex: William Woodin; Hans Schulman to King Farouk; The Palace Collections of Egypt (Sotheby's, 2/1954), lot 1815; to Sol Kaplan; to Gene Wolfe; Gene Wolfe Collection / FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2000), lot 7423; Stack's (12/2003), lot 197, uncertified, where it brought $9800.
