Description

    Lovely 1868 Braided Hair
    Ten Cent Nickel Pattern
    Judd-647, PR64

    1868 10C Ten Cents, Judd-647, Pollock-720, Low R.6, PR64 NGC.
    Design.
The obverse features the almost identical design used on large cents from 1843 to 1857, while the reverse is similar to the Coronet large cent except the wreath is smaller and open, and TEN CENTS is in the center of the wreath. Struck in nickel with a plain edge.

    Commentary.
Judd-647 and Judd-648 are clearly produced from two different obverse dies. The obverse of Judd-647 has the left base of the 1 over the left center of a dentil, the curl point about over the right edge of the first 8, and the final 8 clearly recut. The obverse of Judd-648 has the left base of the 1 over the right center of a dentil, the curl point between the inner and outer right curves of the 8, and the 86 minutely recut. Judd-648 is also a blundered obverse die, with the tops of stray digits visible in the border below the 86. The reverse dies are the same on both Judd numbers, with the top of a stray A midway between the A and M.

    Physical Description.
All design elements are boldly defined on this brilliant light gray proof. It is a Choice piece with highly lustrous and satiny surfaces that exhibit faint champagne toning. A few tiny spots, lint marks, and planchet flakes are evident, but there are no other significant imperfections. NGC Census: 3 in PR64 with 8 finer. PCGS Population: 4 in PR64 with 3 finer. (12/08)

    Provenance.
    Ex: Stack's private treaty.
