Description

1868 Cent Pattern in Nickel
Judd-608, Centered Date Variant, PR62

1868 1C Cent, Judd-608, Pollock-673, R.4, PR62 PCGS. The design closely resembles the contemporary three cent nickel, but only a single pillar represents the denomination within the wreath, and the ribbon ends are more prominent. The die variant with the 1 in the date centered over a dentil. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. This particular variety does not appear to match either of the photos on the USPatterns.com website. The Centered Date variant there shows a longer flag on the top of the 1 in the date than seen here. The fields are moderately reflective, and there is an oval-shaped area of planchet granularity in the upper-left portion of the obverse. Bright surfaces with just the slightest tinge of patina present. The central device of Liberty shows some softness of detail on the hair curls.
