    Description

    1868 'Roman Numeral' Cent Pattern
PR66 Brown, Judd-606, Finest at NGC
    Perhaps Seven Pieces Known

1868 1C One Cent, Judd-606, Pollock-671, High R.7, PR66 Brown NGC. Ex: Bass/ANA Museum Display. The obverse greatly resembles the three cent nickel design but the coin is smaller, with date 1868 touching Liberty's lowest curl and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. The reverse carries out the same idea for a cent, a single Roman numeral "I" appearing as a central column with wreath surrounding. Struck in copper with a plain edge. USPatterns.com estimates that more than a half-dozen are known. These were issued in sets along with three cent and five cent pieces of similar design. This lovely example is toned in lilac-blue patina on each side and shows no mentionable defects. This piece is the finest certified at NGC by two grade points (7/14).
Ex: David Proskey (11/1909); 41st Sale (New Netherlands, 1953), lot 519 (not 310 as in the Bass Sylloge); ANA Sale (Stack's, 3/1971), lot 310; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Research Foundation. Accompanied by an inventory tag showing recent provenance. HBCC-6068 (Bass Sylloge number).
Selections From The Harry Bass, Jr. Foundation's A.N.A. Museum Display. (NGC ID# 29MY, PCGS# 60818)
