Description

1868 Three Cent Nickel
Judd-618, PR55

1868 3CN Three Cent Nickel, Judd-618, Pollock-687, R.4, PR55 NGC. Similar to the regular issue three cent nickel, but the diameter is the same as an Indian cent and the devices on both sides are set in larger fields. In addition, the Roman numerals on the reverse are smooth and without ribs. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. These pieces were also struck in copper and aluminum. Apparently this example slipped into the channels of commerce before someone noticed the design difference. The gray-brilliant surfaces are remarkably clean for a circulated coin.

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 29NA, PCGS# 60834, Greysheet# 13163)
