    Description

1868 Three Cent Nickel Pattern, PR65 Cameo
    Judd-615, Thick Planchet

1868 3CN Three Cent Nickel, Thick Planchet, Judd-615, Pollock-680, R.5, PR65 Cameo PCGS. CAC. 2.93 gm. The wide obverse borders on this design resulted when a regular size (17.9 mm) three cent nickel obverse die was used on a wider diameter (19.1 mm) planchet. The pattern reverse features the wreath from the three dollar piece while the denomination is designated by three Roman columns. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Light gold toning visits satiny, nicely struck, and unabraded surfaces. A trio of trivial mint-made obverse lintmarks determine the grade.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2010), lot 5015.
