1868 Three Cent Nickel Pattern, PR65 Cameo
Judd-615, Thick Planchet
1868 3CN Three Cent Nickel, Thick Planchet, Judd-615,
Pollock-680, R.5, PR65 Cameo PCGS. 2.9 grams. The wide obverse
borders on this design resulted when a regular size (17.9 mm) three
cent nickel obverse die was used on a regulation cent size (19.1
mm) planchet. The size of the reverse die corresponded properly to
the size of the planchet and left no over-sized border. Struck in
nickel, with a plain edge. The present example is brightly lustrous
and well detailed, with mirrored fields and no mentionable
distractions. The PCGS population report shows only this example of
Judd-615 in PR65 Cameo, with none finer (8/10).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 29N7, Variety PCGS# 70827, Base PCGS# 60827, GSID# 13164)
