1868 Five Dollar in Aluminum
Judd-660, PR64
Ex: Bass Core Collection
1868 $5 Five Dollar, Judd-660, Pollock-733, Low R.7, PR64
PCGS. Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection. Each side features the
regular-issue design for the 1868 half eagle but struck in aluminum
with a reeded edge. About six examples are known. They were
manufactured for inclusion in complete year sets in this exotic
metal rather than as die trials, as is often noted. This frosty
near-Gem is typically bright and flashy. While moderate contrast
exists between the fields and devices, no Cameo designation is
present.Ex: Palace Collections of Egypt (King Farouk) (Sotheby's, 2-3/1954); Harry X Boosel Collection (RARCOA, 4/1972), lot 1067; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Core Collection, Part IV (Heritage, 8/2023), lot 9095.
