Description

1868 Five Cent Pattern in Nickel
Judd-623, PR64

1868 5C Five Cents, Judd-623, Pollock-692, Low R.6, PR64 PCGS. The obverse depicts Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. Around, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and below, the date, with a wide border. On the reverse, the denomination 5 CENTS is enclosed within a laurel wreath, with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above, and a wide border. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. USPatterns.com estimates probably 40-50 pieces are known of this nickel pattern. As often seen with nickel products, the surfaces have slight granularity and are just a tad softly struck in the centers. Each side is surprisingly well-mirrored in the fields, though, and just the faintest rose patina is seen throughout.
