Description

1868 Five Cents in Copper, PR64 Red
Judd-627, Struck on a Broad Planchet

1868 5C Five Cents, Judd-627, Pollock-696, R.7, PR64 Red PCGS. The obverse closely resembles the contemporary three cent nickel. The reverse is a pattern design, and has a laurel branch with ribbon framing a large 5 and CENTS in curved letters. IN GOD WE TRUST is at the the upper border. Struck in copper with a plain edge. The planchet has the diameter of a silver quarter and the rims are very broad, usual for Judd-627. A well-struck, rose-red near-Gem with scattered minor obverse carbon. Though designated as Low R.7 in the 10th edition of Judd, we feel more comfortable with the USPatterns.com estimate of "about a half dozen known."
