Description

Seldom-Offered 1868 Five Cent Pattern, Judd-623

1868 5C Five Cents, Judd-623, Pollock-692, R.5-6, PR 64 NGC. The obverse shows the head of Liberty similar to the three cent nickel; the reverse has 5 CENTS in the center, encircled by wreath, IN GOD WE TRUST at the top in very small letters. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. This piece is similar to the Harper specimen we sold in the 1996 ANA, but we cannot be certain if it is the same coin or not as that piece was not photographed. Both coins are brilliant and show good mirrored reflectivity in the fields. But more significantly, both patterns also show surface granularity, most likely the result of an improperly prepared planchet.
