    Description

1869 Standard Silver Ten Cents in Aluminum
    Judd-700, PR64

1869 10C Standard Silver Ten Cents, Judd-700, Pollock-779, Low R.7, PR64 NGC. On the obverse, a right-facing Liberty wears a Phrygian cap decorated with three stars. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA borders the upper periphery of the obverse, with IN GOD WE TRUST in a curved ribbon below. The reverse displays STANDARD SILVER around the upper edge, and 10 CENTS is inside an oak and laurel wreath. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. Examples are also known in silver and copper (reeded and plain edges), but the aluminum pieces are the scarcest, in this case only an estimated half-dozen examples are known. The fields were heavily striated and have imparted depth of reflectivity that is often seen on aluminum patterns. The grade is derived from a couple of spots of oxidation. A curious flan crack is seen on the obverse margin at 4 o'clock. A planchet lamination, often seen on aluminum patterns, is seen at the top of the reverse.
