Rarely Offered 1869 Standard Silver
1869 10C Standard Silver Ten Cents, Judd-710, Pollock-789, Low
R.7, PR66 Red and Brown NGC.
Dime Pattern in Copper
Judd-710, PR66 Red and Brown
Design. On the obverse Liberty faces right, wearing a headband that is adorned with a single large star in the forehead area. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA borders the upper periphery, with IN GOD WE TRUST in a curved ribbon below. On the reverse STANDARD SILVER is around the upper edge, with 10 / CENTS in an oak and laurel wreath. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.
Commentary. The majority of patterns produced with this die marriage are found on silver planchets. The copper and aluminum versions are much less available. The Official Red Book of Auction Records by John Dannreuther and Jeff Garrett, which includes records of pattern sales between 1990 and 2005, identifies only one Judd-710 pattern, a PCGS-certified PR65 Brown specimen sold in our January 2002 FUN auction (lot 11515). All of the other five varieties in the Judd-708 to Judd-713 grouping are represented by two or more sales in the same reference, which is a clear statement of the true rarity of Judd-710.
Physical Description. Most of the original red luster still remains, with only slight mellowing visible. The area above Liberty's ear--which is typically poorly formed on this issue--is boldly defined. A small toning spot in the obverse field between Liberty's throat and the second A of AMERICA is documented here for the purpose of future identification. USPatterns.com suggests that "about a dozen [pieces] are known." NGC Census: 1 in PR66 Red and Brown, none finer. PCGS Population: None in PR66 Red and Brown, none finer in Red and Brown, with a single Red designated piece graded PR65 Red (12/08).
Provenance. Ex: Stack's private treaty transaction.
