Description
1869 SIL. / NIC. Dime Pattern
Judd-714, PR64
Cupro-Nickel Experimental Strike
1869 10C Ten Cents, Judd-714, Pollock-793, Cassel-22, Low R.7,
PR64 PCGS. 30.9 grains. The obverse features the regular issue
Liberty Seated design without the date. The reverse is inscribed
SIL. 9 / NIC. 1 / 1869. Struck in cupro-nickel composition with a
reeded edge. While one would naturally assume (as did Adams-Woodin
and the early editions of the Judd book) that this pattern would be
a metallurgical trial for a silver / nickel alloy, that has not
turned out to be the case. The only pieces known of this pattern
are in copper-nickel alloy. This particular piece was SEM-EDX
tested by S&N Labs on certificate number 60939.64/2510321 and
turned out to be 75% copper and 25% nickel. The surfaces have the
"hard" look of a nickel coin with satiny mint luster and light
oil-slick iridescence over each side. In spite of the high nickel
content, the strike details are strongly brought up, and there are
no obvious or detracting abrasions. A light streak of discoloration
through the S in SIL. Is noted, and is an easy pedigree identifier.
Fine diagonal die striations are seen to the upper-right of the
figure of Liberty, a characteristic of all patterns in this
series.Ex: David B. Silberman, Jr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 11/1988), lot 5392; ANA Signature Auction (Heritage, 8/1998), lot 5103; David Cassel.
