1869 Copper Ten Cent Pattern
Judd-715, PR66 Brown
SIL. / NIC. Reverse Design
1869 10C Ten Cents, Judd-715, Pollock-794, Low R.7, PR66 Brown
NGC. 2.4 grams. The obverse is similar to the regular issue,
but without the date in the exergual area. The reverse has SIL. 9 /
NIC. 1 / 1869 in large letters and digits. This reverse design
pattern was struck in copper with a reeded edge. Of the six known
examples of this copper striking, this is the finest certified.
SEM-EDX testing by Ledoux & Company Certificate number 919577-011
proved it to be almost pure copper: 99.7% copper and 0.2% nickel.
Curiously, the silver / nickel alloy stamped on the reverse of this
piece does not appear to exist on any coins of this design. The
production of this almost pure copper piece makes one wonder what
was intended by Mint officials. Since we last handled this piece,
testing has yielded slightly different results. NGC has now
determined the piece to be 100% copper. The weight is the same.
Formerly it was expressed as 37 grains, now it is 2.4 grams. When
converted to grains, 2.4 grams is 37.03 grains. Each side displays
variegated "autumn leaves" toning that is quite deep in hue, yet
the surfaces show strong underlying brightness. Pronounced die
striations are easily seen in the upper-right of the obverse as
well as the long diagonal die scratch in the lower obverse field
that passes under the foot of Liberty.Ex: Goldberg Auctions (5/2003), lot 593; David Cassel; David Cassel Collection / ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2015), lot 5959.
