    1869 Ten Cents Pattern, PR64
    Judd-716, SIL. / NIC. / COP. Reverse

1869 10C Ten Cents, Judd-716, Pollock-795, Unlisted in Cassel, High R.6, PR64 PCGS. The obverse is similar to the regular issue, but without the date in exergue. The reverse has SIL. / NIC. / COP. in larger letters, the date is below, smaller, and slightly curved. Allegedly struck in Koulz's alloy, a variant of German silver, with a reeded edge. SEM-EDX testing was done on this piece, but the totals only add up to 98%. The known percentages are: 35% nickel, 38% copper, and 25% silver. This piece has the appearance of a nickel coin with more subdued, satiny surfaces and minimally reflective fields. Each side displays finely variegated rose-lilac-gray patina, and there are no mentionable flaws on either side. Sharply defined throughout.
