1869 Cent Pattern, Struck in Nickel

1869 1C One Cent, Judd-666, Pollock-742, R.5, PR64 PCGS. The obverse exhibits a bust of Liberty facing left with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery and the date below the bust. Liberty wears a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. A Roman numeral I is centered in a laurel wreath on the reverse. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. There are four combinations of this pattern. This is the third variant listed on USPatterns.com. It features Obverse 3 combined with Reverse B: The date is centered and high and the L in LIBERTY is under the second pearl. The reverse has thin ribbon ends. The fields are moderately reflective and the striking details are soft, both are attributes that are expected from nickel coins, especially early ones. Light, streaky gray-lilac surfaces.
