    Aluminum 1869 Quarter Eagle, Judd-770, PR65
Rare Off-Metal Striking With Field-Device Contrast

1869 $2 1/2 Quarter Eagle, Judd-770, Pollock-855, Low R.7, PR65 PCGS. Regular dies trial of the 1869 quarter eagle. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. There was probably no real need for an aluminum quarter eagle dies trial in 1869; USPatterns.com states "these were actually deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete sets." There are also examples known in copper and nickel (believed unique in that metal). Nevertheless, the opportunity to acquire an aluminum pattern from such an early date should not be taken lightly. This bright, deeply reflective example shows obvious signs of die polish in the reverse fields. Each side also displays bold, but unacknowledged, contrast between the fields and the frosted devices. (PCGS# 61001)
