    Well Struck 1869 Standard Silver
    Quarter Pattern, PR66
    Judd-722, High R.6

    1869 25C Standard Silver Quarter Dollar, Judd-722, Pollock-803, High R.6, PR66 NGC.
On the obverse a right-facing Liberty wears a Phrygian cap decorated with three stars at the front. A ribbon bearing the word LIBERTY flows from the base of the cap to Liberty's shoulder. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA borders the upper periphery, with IN GOD WE TRUST in a curved ribbon below. The reverse shows STANDARD SILVER around the upper edge, with 25 / CENTS in an open oak and laurel wreath. The date, 1869, is at the lower periphery. Struck in silver with a plain edge.

It is astonishing that the Mint failed to document the thousands of Standard Silver patterns--comprising hundreds of different varieties--that were struck in 1869 and 1870. Based on the surviving documentation of contemporary numismatists, it is clear that the Mint issued many more patterns than necessary, and the motive was simply profit. However, some varieties--such as the current offering--were produced in small quantities and today are elusive, regardless of condition.

    Physical Description.
Boldly struck, especially in comparison to the Judd-721 pattern in this sale, which was produced from the same dies in the same composition, but with a reeded edge. Deep cinnamon coloration throughout is occasionally interrupted by areas of cobalt toning at the peripheries. We find no flaws or distractions requiring disclosure on this Premium Gem proof pattern. NGC Census: 3 in PR66, none finer. PCGS Population: 2 in PR66, none finer (12/08).
