Eye-Appealing 1869 Standard Silver Quarter in Copper
    PR64 Brown, Judd-723, Low R.7

    1869 25C Standard Silver Quarter Dollar, Judd-723, Pollock-804, Low R.7, PR64 Brown NGC.
On the obverse a right-facing Liberty wears a Phrygian cap decorated with three stars at the front. A ribbon bearing the word LIBERTY flows from the base of the cap to Liberty's shoulder. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA borders the upper periphery, with IN GOD WE TRUST in a curved ribbon below. The reverse shows STANDARD SILVER around the upper edge, with 25 / CENTS in an open oak and laurel wreath. The date, 1869, is positioned at the lower periphery. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

The Judd-721 through Judd-726 quarter patterns were produced from the same die pair. The six varieties of the current design were struck in silver, copper, and aluminum. Judd-723--the current offering--was considered an R.6 variety by Pollock and is listed as such on the website. However, the ninth edition of United States Pattern Coins by Judd opines that Judd-723 is a Low R.7 variety. In actuality, this issue is on the border of High R.6 and Low R.7, based on an analysis of certified coin population data and auction records. Sixteen examples are certified at NGC and PCGS combined, less duplicates (11/08).

    Physical Description.
A halo of champagne iridescence frames turquoise centers on this reflective proof. The strike is variable, with noted weakness in the left obverse and central reverse design details. LIBERTY on the central obverse ribbon is poorly defined as well. A natural planchet void below the 18 of the date is noted for the sake of full disclosure. NGC Census: 1 in PR64, 3 finer. PCGS Population: 3 in PR64, 5 finer (12/08).
