    1869 Standard Silver Quarter Pattern
    Judd-730, Low R.7, PR65 Red Cameo

    1869 25C Standard Silver Quarter Dollar, Judd-730, Pollock-811, Low R.7, PR65 Red Cameo NGC.
On the obverse a right-facing Liberty wears a starless tiara. A headband behind the tiara bears the legend LIBERTY in raised letters. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA borders the upper rim, with IN GOD WE TRUST in a curved ribbon below. On the reverse STANDARD SILVER is around the upper edge, with 25 / CENTS in an open oak and laurel wreath. Struck in copper with a plain edge.

Judd-730 is a rare pattern by any definition. The website suggests an extant population of less than 12 examples. The ninth edition of United States Pattern Coins by J. Hewitt Judd provides a rarity rating of Low R.7, which correlates to between seven and 12 pieces on the modified Sheldon rarity scale. Considering the combined certified population of seven pieces (10/08) and the seven examples sold at major auction since 1990--both figures possibly representing more than one appearance of the same coin--it is clear that Judd-730 falls on the border of Low R.7 and High R.7.

    Physical Description
. This piece displays fiery-red coloration over beautifully mirrored surfaces and frosty devices. Faint traces of an old fingerprint on the reverse preclude an even higher grade on this Gem proof pattern. Pollock (1994) included the current specimen in his census with the following data: "64.0 grains, diameter: 0.898 inches, die alignment: about 170 degrees." This specimen is the finest example graded by either service. The NGC Census Report documents three examples in all grades, with the current offering the only one at the PR65 Red level (11/08). It also has the distinction of being a Cameo piece--the only such example designated as such by the major services. PCGS has thus far certified four Judd-730 patterns, with the highest assigned grade a PR64 Red. The current population data likely include one or more resubmissions.
