    Description

    Rare 1869 Standard Silver Quarter
    Struck in Copper, Judd-736
Low R.7, PR65 Red and Brown

1869 25C Standard Silver Quarter Dollar, Judd-736, Pollock-817, Low R.7, PR65 Red and Brown NGC.
    Design.
On the obverse a right-facing Liberty wears a headband displaying LIBERTY in raised letters and a single star at the front. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA borders the upper rim, with IN GOD WE TRUST in a curved ribbon below. The reverse shows STANDARD SILVER around the upper edge, with 25 / CENTS in an open oak and laurel wreath. The date, 1869, is at the lower rim. Struck in copper with a plain edge.

    Commentary.
Pattern specialists agree that less than 12 Judd-736 patterns exist in all grades. Both of the copper pattern issues bearing this design--the reeded edge and plain edge variants--are rare, yet the plain edge version offered here appears to be slightly less available, based on the infrequency of auction appearances and the combined population data of NGC and PCGS.

    Physical Description.
Teetering on the edge of a full Red designation, this specimen was likely limited by areas of darker toning in the right obverse field and on the high points of Liberty. The surfaces, otherwise, are pleasing and fully deserving of a Gem proof determination. Before being encapsulated, the current offering was documented at 85.9 grains with a diameter of 0.899 inches. The die alignment is approximately 170 degrees (Pollock, 1994). NGC Census: 1 in PR65 Red and Brown, 1 finer. PCGS Population: There are only 2 Judd-736 coins graded by PCGS both having achieved the grade of PR64 Red (12/08).

    Provenance.
Ex: Lee Collection (Superior, 9/1988), lot 2843..
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
    (NGC ID# 29SL, PCGS# 80963)
