    Description

    Enticing 1869 Standard Silver Half, Judd-742, PR63

    1869 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-742, Pollock-823, R.5, PR63 NGC.
    Design.
The obverse features a right-facing Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap decorated with two large stars at the front. A ribbon with LIBERTY in raised letters flows over Liberty's hair. Within the two central folds of the ribbon--above the L in LIBERTY--is the engraver's initial, B, identifying this as a William Barber design. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA boldly encircles the periphery, with IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll below. The D in GOD is dramatically repunched, with bold remnants of the letter visible by a full character space to the right. On the reverse 50 / CENTS is within an oak and laurel wreath, with STANDARD SILVER at the upper rim and the date below. Two small stars in the lower field--one in the left and one in the right--complete the design. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
Although William Barber engraved this obverse, James B. Longacre's earlier concept, specifically the five dollar pattern of 1860, Judd-271, inspired the design. And, unlike the dime and quarter Standard Silver patterns of 1869, the half dollar issues included a fourth metal composition--brass.

    Physical Description.
Variegated hues of teal and cinnamon coloration blanket the mirrored surfaces of this Select proof survivor. Minuscule toning spots scattered about both sides, although not visually distracting, preclude a higher grade. The strike is average. This more-available (though still quite rare) pattern variety has seen several dozen examples certified at NGC and PCGS combined, with most averaging PR62 or PR63 (11/08). NGC Census: 4 in PR63, 7 finer. PCGS Population: 8 in PR63, 12 finer (12/08).
