Description
Stunning 1869 Standard Silver Half Dollar
Judd-743, High R.6, PR66
1869 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-743, Pollock-824,
High R.6, PR66 NGC. Design. The obverse features a right-facing Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap decorated with two large stars at the front. A ribbon with LIBERTY in raised letters flows over Liberty's hair. Within the two central folds of the ribbon--above the L in LIBERTY--is the engraver's initial, B, identifying this as a William Barber design. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA boldly encircles the periphery, with IN GOD WE TRUST in a scroll below. The D in GOD is dramatically repunched, with bold remnants of the letter visible by a full character space to the right. On the reverse 50 / CENTS is within an oak and laurel wreath, with STANDARD SILVER at the upper rim and the date below. Two small stars in the lower field--one in the left and one in the right--complete the design. Struck in silver with a plain edge.
Commentary. Judd-743 differs from Judd-742 only by the absence of edge reeding. Interestingly, the plain edge piece offered here is substantially rarer than Judd-742 and less then a dozen specimens are believed extant in all grades, according to the USPatterns.com website. The NGC Census Report confirms the relative scarcity of each issue: 18 Judd-742 patterns have been graded compared to a paltry five Judd-743 issues, all grades considered (10/08).
Physical Description. A Premium Gem proof survivor. Highly reflective fields reveal russet and electric-blue coloration when rotated under a light source. A slightly weak strike, common to the issue, is redeemed by the pristine state of surface preservation. A stunning half dollar pattern in both design and quality. NGC Census: 2 in PR66, none finer. PCGS Population: The finest PCGS graded coin is a single PR65 (12/08).
Provenance. Unknown.
