1869 Standard Silver Half in Copper
    Judd-751, Low R.7, PR65 Brown
Among the Finest of Less Than Six Known

    1869 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-751, Pollock-834, Low R.7, PR65 Brown NGC.
Liberty, wearing a plain tiara, faces right. A headband behind the tiara features LIBERTY in raised letters. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA dominates the upper periphery, with IN GOD WE TRUST in a ribbon below. On the reverse 50 / CENTS is within an oak and laurel wreath, with STANDARD SILVER at the upper periphery and the date below. Two six-pointed stars in the lower field--one on the left and one on the right--complete the design. Struck in copper with a plain edge.

Plain edge copper examples of this series--Judd-748 to Judd-753--are challenging to locate in any condition. Although the ninth edition of Judd's United States Pattern Coins suggests that the Judd-753 plain edge aluminum pattern is the rarest of the six issues (not counting Judd-753A), the Judd-751 offered here appears to be equally as rare. Both Judd-751 and Judd-753 have appeared at auction the same number of times prior to the current sale, and the combined NGC and PCGS population data are similar for both varieties. Furthermore, the website indicates that less than six examples are known for both Judd-751 and Judd-753.

    Physical Description.
Reflective, chocolate-brown surfaces reveal subtle blue and mauve highlights when examined under a light source. The strike is bold for the issue--probably due to the relative softness of the copper planchet. A couple of small, dark toning spots in the right obverse field are now integral to this specimen and serve as permanent pedigree identifiers. Census: 1 in 65 Brown, 0 finer (10/08). Numerically tied for finest, as PCGS has certified two PR65 Red and Brown specimens at the finest there.
