    William Barber-Designed 1870 Seated Dollar
Struck in Aluminum, Judd-1007, PR65 Cameo

1870 $1 Dollar, Judd-1007, Pollock-1140, High R.7, PR65 Cameo PCGS. CAC. William Barber's Seated Liberty design shows Liberty's right hand holding a shield, left hand an olive branch, Liberty pole behind the right elbow. The reverse is struck from regular dies. Sets were available in silver, copper, and aluminum with either reeded or plain edges. This obverse was also combined with the Standard Silver wreath reverse. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. This is a stunning Cameo example that goes a long way toward explaining why some pattern collectors specialize in aluminum strikings. Aluminum will oxidize or turn hazy, but this piece has been expertly preserved with neither of those often-found problems present here. The fields are deeply mirrored, as one would expect, and the devices show thick mint frost. (NGC ID# 29ZT, PCGS# 61254)

I received the catalog and was very impressed with its color illustrations, descriptions and attractive layout. (It has better production values than the New York houses.)
