Description

    1870 Pattern Dollar, PR64 Cameo
    Judd-997, Standard Silver Series

1870 $1 Judd-997, Pollock-1128, R.7, PR64 Cameo PCGS. CAC. Liberty is seated left with 13 stars arranged around the periphery and the date 1870 below. Liberty's left hand holds an olive branch, and her right hand supports a shield over which is draped a scroll inscribed LIBERTY. A freestanding Liberty pole is behind. On the reverse, the denomination 1 DOLLAR is centered within a wreath of corn and cotton. The word STANDARD is at the top. Struck in silver with a plain edge.
Fully detailed design motifs on both sides host frosty luster with deeply mirrored silver fields inside a frame of delicate gold toning. This stunning piece is only the fourth Judd-997 pattern in any of our auctions since we began our archives in January 1993. It is also tied with a PR64 Cameo NGC coin for the finest we have seen. A remarkable example. PCGS has certified just three examples of Judd-997, including this coin and two PR62 pieces (2/11). (NGC ID# 29ZK, PCGS# 61244)
