    Description

    1870 Standard Silver Dollar, Judd-998
PR64 Red and Brown, Tied for Finest Certified

    1870 $1 Standard Silver Dollar, Judd-998, Pollock-1129, Low R.7, PR64 Red and Brown NGC.
    Design.
A seated Liberty faces left, with 13 stars ringing the rim and the date 1870 in exergue. She holds a shield with her right hand and an olive branch in her left. A cap rests atop a Liberty pole, and a scroll crosses the shield with LIBERTY thereon. On the reverse a wreath of corn and cotton encloses 1 / DOLLAR, the latter in an upcurving arc, with STANDARD in tiny letters at the upper rim. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
Another "illogical die combination" with no reference to the United States of America--or IN GOD WE TRUST, for that matter--on either side. Perhaps a dozen exist.

    Physical Description.
Each side retains most of the original mint red luster with only slight mellowing. Brightly reflective, there are few distractions on either side. The only spot of any note is located above Liberty's foot. NGC Census: one each in PR63 Red and Brown, PR64 Brown (this piece), PR64 Red and Brown. PCGS Population: 10 pieces, the finest two each in PR64 Brown and PR64 Red and Brown (11/08). The present piece is thus tied for the numerically finest certified.

    Provenance.
    Ex: Stack's private treaty.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (NGC ID# 29ZL, PCGS# 61245)
