    Description

1870 Copper Dies Trial for the Ten Dollar
    Judd-1035, PR64 Brown
Only Four or Five Pieces Known

1870 $10 Ten Dollar, Judd-1035, Pollock-1170, R.8, PR64 Brown PCGS. Both the obverse and reverse are struck with the regular issue design for 1870 ten dollar gold coins. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. There would appear to be no logical reason to strike a regular dies trial for the ten dollar gold piece in copper, aluminum, or nickel. Yet all are known. The nickel striking is believed unique, two or three are known of the aluminum pieces, and there are four or five of the copper dies trial. The surfaces on this piece are uniformly brown with just the slightest trace of underlying red still evident. The strike is complete throughout and there are no obvious or detracting marks.
