Description

    1870 Standard Silver Dime, Judd-843
    PR66, Tied for Finest Certified

    1870 10C Standard Silver Ten Cents, Judd-843, Pollock-942, Low R.6, PR66 NGC.
    Design.
The Liberty Head design, no stars on the tiara, IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll below the portrait. On the reverse an open agricultural wreath encloses 10 CENTS, date 1870 below. STANDARD is at the upper rim. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

    Commentary.
These were struck in both plain edge and reeded edge versions, and both are generally available for a price. Although Judd rates both issues Low R.6 (21-30 known), there are 19 plain edge (Judd-844) pieces certified at both services combined, compared with 50 of the reeded edge (Judd-843)--as always, less a percentage of duplications.

    Physical Description.
A delicate blush of gold and ice-blue accentuates the mostly silver-gray surfaces. An attractive and high-end survivor of this relatively available Standard Silver issue. This piece is tied for finest certified at either service, with a half-dozen so graded (11/08).

    Provenance.
    Ex: Gibson-Groves Collections (Stack's, 11/1974), lot 457.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (NGC ID# 29VK, PCGS# 61087)
