Rare 1870 Seated Liberty Dime Pattern
    William Barber's Design
    Judd-832, PR66, Finest Certified

    1870 10C Ten Cents, Judd-832, Pollock-922, Low R.7, PR66 NGC.
Attributed to William Barber, the obverse depicts a seated figure of Liberty facing left and supporting a shield in her right hand, an olive branch in her left. A free-standing liberty pole is present behind the shield. The reverse has the same cereal wreath type used to coin regular issue 1870 dimes. Sets were available of this design in silver, copper, and aluminum with either reeded or plain edges. It is unknown what price the Mint sold these for. This obverse was also combined with the Standard Silver wreath reverse. Struck in silver with a plain edge.

The Mint marketed various five-piece sets of William Barber's Seated Liberty coinage to collectors in 1870. Each set consisted of the five silver denominations from half dime through dollar, and they appeared in copper, silver, and aluminum, each with either a reeded edge or a plain edge. In total there were 30 different varieties among the five denominations. The sets struck in silver with a plain edge included Judd-816, 832, 883, 934, and 1003. Each denomination incorporated the William Barber obverse design with the regular issue reverse design.

    Physical Description.
A stunning Premium Gem proof with intermingled violet, cobalt-blue, and gold toning over fully mirrored fields. The devices on both sides are lustrous, with noticeable contrast, although such a designation has eluded this piece due to its deep original toning. This is the single finest certified of this pattern variant at either NGC or PCGS (11/08).
