Description

1870 Ten Cents in Copper
Judd-873, PR65+ Brown

1870 10C Ten Cents, Judd-873, Pollock-970, High R.7, PR65+ Brown PCGS. CAC. Ex: Simpson. Struck from regular Seated dime dies, but in copper with a reeded edge. This category of coin is traditionally referred to as a dies trial piece, but in practice, it is likely that a few 1870 denomination sets were assembled for sale to well-connected dealers or collectors. About a half dozen copper pieces are known. There are also two or three strikes in aluminum and a single example in nickel. The fields on this piece are remarkably bright and reflective, which brightens the already light blue and reddish-golden color seen on each side. Population: 1 in 65 (1 in 65+) Brown, 1 finer. CAC: 1 in 65, 0 finer (12/25).
Ex: Bob R. Simpson Collection (Heritage, 8/2021), lot 3128; US Coins Signature (Heritage, 12/2021), lot 3277.

Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 61117, Greysheet# 13564)
