1870 Quarter Eagle Dies Trial in Copper
    Judd-1026, PR63 Red and Brown

1870 $2 1/2 Quarter Eagle, Judd-1026, Pollock-1161, R.7, PR63 Red and Brown PCGS. A dies trial featuring the regular-issue Liberty Head quarter eagle dies for the year 1870. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. suggests these off-metal strikings were produced for sale to collectors. Apparently, few were sold. Just six or so examples are known. Fire-orange color accounts for the Red part of the designation, while splashes of deep violet and gunmetal toning explain the Brown. The motifs are predictably razor-sharp, and small marks only turn up under magnification.

With the superb catalog, a masterwork prepared by Mark Borckhardt, the sale was destined to meet all of my expectations; that it did, and then some. Be assured that I would highly recommend Heritage Auctions to any of my associates contemplating the sale
