    1870 Double Eagle in Aluminum
    Judd-1039, AU55

1870 $20 Twenty Dollar, Judd-1039, Pollock-1174, High R.7, AU55 PCGS. A small number of 1870 proof sets, from the cent through the double eagle, were struck in aluminum, presumably as an offering to well-placed collectors of the day. This rare die trials piece is struck from regular issue dies in aluminum with a reeded edge. About a half-dozen copper examples are known, but only three pieces are believed extant in aluminum. Curiously, this piece shows evidence of friction. It is unlikely to have circulated since no commercial value could have been established for an aluminum striking, so it must have been carried for a considerable time as a pocket piece. Numerous small to medium-sized contact marks accrued to the surfaces over those years; yet, the fields are still deeply reflective. An interesting and unusual pattern.
