1870 Quarter Dies Trial in Copper, Judd-924
Fewer Than Six Known, PR61 Brown

1870 25C Quarter Dollar, Judd-924, Pollock-1029, High R.7, PR61 Brown PCGS Secure. Regular dies trial strike for the 1870 quarter. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. As noted on the USPatterns.com website: "Although described as regular dies trial pieces, this was more likely deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of a complete off-metal set." Nevertheless, it is very scarce. We have only offered Judd-924 once before, this very coin in our 2004 FUN Signature sale. Saul Teichman believes fewer than a half dozen copper strikings are known. Even brown surfaces are seen over each side with a couple of small contact marks present. Evidence of die rust in the left obverse field makes one wonder when exactly this piece was struck.
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2004), lot 10626.
