    Description

1870 Plain Edge Standard Silver Quarter
    Judd-889, PR65

    1870 25C Standard Silver Quarter Dollar, Judd-889, Pollock-988, Low R.7, PR65 NGC.
    Design.
The Liberty Head design with cap and three stars on the tiara. On the reverse an open agricultural wreath encloses 25 CENTS, date 1870 below. STANDARD is at the upper rim. Struck in silver with a plain edge.

    Commentary.
Much rarer than the reeded edge version of the same pattern, with perhaps a dozen examples extant in all conditions. Andrew Pollock, in his United States Patterns and Related Issues (1994), documents six known examples of Judd-889, although the possibility of duplication in his roster exists. The quality of auction catalog photography varied in the early 1980s, so plate matching today can be challenging. If anything, there are less than six different specimens traced.

    Physical Description.
Delicious rose-pink toning covers the obverse, with the reverse adding some blue and violet accents. A pretty and well-struck Gem. Pollock provided measurements of the current offering in his reference: 84.4 grains, 0.898 in diameter, and a die alignment of "about 170 degrees." Census: 1 in 65, 1 finer (10/08).

    Provenance.
    Ex: Stack's private treaty.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
