Description
1870 Standard Silver Quarter in Copper
Judd-903, PR61 Red and Brown
1870 25C Standard Silver Quarter Dollar, Judd-903, Pollock-1018,
R.7, PR61 Red and Brown PCGS. The bust of Liberty faces right
on the obverse with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around and the motto
IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll below. Liberty's hair is tied in a bun.
On the reverse, the denomination 25 CENTS and date 1870 are in a
wreath of cotton and corn with the inscription STANDARD above.
Struck in copper with a plain edge. Like most Standard Silver
patterns, this obverse / reverse combination was struck in silver,
copper, and aluminum, in both reeded edge and plain edge variants.
The common pieces of this type are the silver, reeded edge
examples. The copper, plain edge pieces are much scarcer with less
than a dozen coins known. This piece was heavily cleaned and
displays the resultant bright red color one would expect. What is
unexpected, though, are heavy die clash marks on each side,
something often seen on regular issue coins but rarely encountered
