Description

1870 Judd-890 Pattern Quarter, PR65 Brown
Struck in Copper, Reeded Edge

1870 25C Standard Silver Quarter, Judd-890, Pollock-989, R.7, PR65 Brown PCGS. CAC. Ex: Simpson. A bust of Liberty wears a cap ornamented with three stars and faces right. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the figure, and a scroll with IN GOD WE TRUST is below. The reverse reads 25 CENTS 1870 in the center and is surrounded by an agricultural wreath. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Faint contrast is noted between the fields and devices on this Gem proof pattern quarter dollar that exhibits vibrant gold, blue, and iridescent toning. At USPatterns.com, Saul Teichman estimates that about a dozen of these are known. Alternatively, the cataloger for Legend Rare Coin Auctions suggested that just four to six were struck.
Ex: Legend Rare Coin Auctions (1/2017), lot 44; Legend Rare Coin Auctions (8/2017), lot 137.
