Description

1870 Seated Liberty Half in Copper
    Judd-936, Exceptional PR65 Red Cameo

1870 50C Half Dollar, Judd-936, Pollock-1042, R.7, PR65 Red Cameo NGC. William Barber's seated figure of Liberty faces left on the obverse. Thirteen stars surround Liberty with the date below. Liberty supports a shield with her right hand, and holds an olive branch in her left hand. A liberty pole is behind the shield, a scroll crosses the shield and is inscribed LIBERTY in raised letters. The reverse is the type used for regular issue Seated halves. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Over a dozen examples are known, according to USPatterns.com, but this is the only Red Cameo Gem certified by either service (4/12). The mint luster is undimmed by the passage of the years and the fields are brightly reflective. Set against the mirroring in the fields is substantial mint frost on the devices. Exceptionally attractive and sure to interest many pattern collectors. (NGC ID# 29Y8, PCGS# 81182)
