1870 Aluminum William Barber Half Dollar
    Judd-931, PR66 Cameo

1870 50C Judd-931, Pollock 1037, High R.7, PR66 Cameo PCGS Secure. CAC. Ex: Stonewall Collection. William Barber's Seated Liberty design, interesting for its placement of the shield behind her legs. The reverse displays an agricultural wreath more suitable for a lower denomination, along with the legends STANDARD and 50 CENTS. An inappropriate pairing of dies, since UNITED STATES OF AMERICA does not appear on either side. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. This piece is remarkably unaffected by post-striking impairments. The only ones that are faintly visible are a tiny rim ding over star 4 and a couple of light contact marks on the flag of the 5 in the denomination on the reverse.
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2006), lot 2493, where it brought $12,650.
    From The Pannonia Collection.
