    Description

Important Copper 1870 Standard Silver Half Dollar
    Judd-942, Pollock-1069, PR64 Brown

    1870 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-942, Pollock-1069, High R.7, PR64 Brown NGC.
    Design.
The obverse design is a bust of Liberty facing right, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around and IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll below. Liberty is wearing a cap ornamented with two stars, and a ribbon crossing her shoulder is inscribed LIBERTY in incuse letters. The reverse has the denomination 50 / CENTS and the date 1870 within a wreath of cotton and corn, with the inscription STANDARD above. Struck in copper with a plain edge.

    Commentary.
Andrew Pollock listed two different varieties for Judd-942, but went on to say that one of them, Pollock-1055, remains unknown. For Pollock-1069, he listed just two auction appearances, both by Bowers and Ruddy. He overlooked this example, surprising since he had viewed and recorded the entire Queller Collection prior to publication of his reference. This example matches the plate of neither piece recorded in Pollock's book, so it is a third known example. At least two other pieces also exist.

    Physical Description.
Considerable pale orange color intermingles with violet and blue on both sides of this Choice proof. A couple of marks appear on Liberty's cheek. Otherwise, the surfaces are nicely preserved, with lightly mirrored fields.

    Census.
