Gem 1870 Standard Silver Half in Copper
Judd-942, High R.7, PR64 Red

1870 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-942, Pollock-1069, High R.7, PR64 Red PCGS. Standard Silver design with a bust of Liberty facing right on the obverse. Liberty wears a cap that is ornamented with two stars, and the word LIBERTY is on a ribbon over her shoulder. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is at the upper border, while the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is on a scroll below. On the reverse, one can see the denomination 50 CENTS and the date 1870 within a wreath of cotton and corn. the word STANDARD is at the upper border. Struck in copper with a plain edge. In the 1994 book United States Pattern and Related Issues, Andrew W. Pollock III actually breaks down examples of Judd-942 into two separate varieties. The present example, a Pollock-1069 coin, is distinguishable from Pollock-1055 by the position of the tip of Liberty's cap relative to the final S in STATES. On this coin, it is under the left side of that letter. The author was aware of two examples of Pollock-1069:

1. Ex: Winthrop Collection Sale (Bowers and Ruddy, 9/1975), lot 1026.

2. Ex: Sieck Collection Sale (Bowers and Ruddy, 10/1981), lot 2411.

The two lots were imaged in their respective catalogs, and neither appears to be the present coin. In addition, an NGC PR65 Brown example appeared as lot 1462 in our 2006 Denver ANA Signature. Both sides of the present piece are fully lustrous with rich reddish-olive coloration. A few scattered carbon spots seem to bar this coin from a full Gem grade, the most readily evident of which is located at the top of Liberty's neck in the center of the obverse. Population: 1 in 64 Red, 0 finer (8/08).
Ex: Trane Collection (Heritage, 1/2003), lot 9925.
